Other KidsRights Projects
Zion Child and Care Trust (ZCCT), Thailand
In Thailand, children whose parents are in prison can either be brought up in an orphanage and never be reunited with their parents, or go and live with their parents in jail. KidsRights’ partner ZCCT takes children out of Thai prisons and houses them in residential homes while their parents remain imprisoned. The children who can now go to school, remain in touch with their parents and ZCCT supports visits to prison as well as communication between the children and their parents. Once the children are reunited with their parents, ZCCT helps the family to establish a decent new life for itself. KidsRights supports a part of the running costs of ZCCT.
Teleois Korban Organization (TKO), South Africa
TKO is a drama, dance and singing group for children in the Ekangala township in South Africa. The vulnerable children in this area grow up in poverty and have very little opportunity to develop themselves. TKO brings children together through activities such as song, dance and drama. This boosts the children’s self confidence, helping them to discover their inner strength and unlock their potential, thereby bolstering the battle against poverty, drugs, crime, and hiv/aids. The first contribution of KidsRights to TKO was to build a theater. This space is now used for rehearsals and performances. With the money TKO earns with the performances, they can support part of the organisational costs.
Save a Childs Heart (SACH), Israel
Save a Child’s Heart (SACH) offers life-saving heart operations and post-operative care to children in developing countries. Doctors treat the children free of charge, regardless of their religion, race, gender, age or background, while fostering a climate in which tolerance and respect for other cultures play a central role. The children come from areas that lack the facilities and medical expertise needed to save their lives. SACH has treated children from countries such as Ivory Coast, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Nigeria, the Palestinian territories, Romania, Russia, Somalia, Ukraine, Vietnam, Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka. The children involved are diagnosed, treated and cared for without charge to their families. KidsRights helps support the provision of care in the special SACH house, where children go to recover from their life-saving operation. A new house is being built in collaboration with Wilde Ganzen so that help can be offered to even more children.
Fred Foundation, Ukraine
Housing and care for streetchildren and orphans remains a big problem in Ukraine. Supported by KidsRights, the Fred Foundation has been able to expand its boarding school in Perechyn. The facility now has five residential units, each with a number of rooms. The living areas have their own facilities and enable young people to lead relatively independent lives. In addition, Fred Foundation and KidsRights have been working on a solution to provide care and accommodation to youngsters, aged 16 years and older. These young people are too old for the boarding school, but not yet old enough to live entirely independently. The extra care they receive protects these youngsters from ending up in the streets.
WereldOuders, Haiti
WereldOuders is a project partner of KidsRights and provides structural support to homeless children in nine countries in Latin America. Wereldouders gives these children a home, care, protection, secondary en tertiary education and medical care. This provides them with a future in which they can strengthen both themselves as well as their society. The family houses WereldOuders provides are often self-sufficient through the presence of a private school, agricultural land, a bakery and in some cases even a clinic.
In Haiti, Wereldouders has been active for 22 years. This enabled them, also partially thanks to the contribution of KidsRights, to quickly provide emergency relief after the earthquake in January 2009. St. Damien Children's Hospital, built by Wereldouders, was damaged but fortunately was able to keep functioning. Before the earthquake, the hospital (only children’s hospital in Haiti) provided medical care to hundreds of children every day. After the earthquake, thousands of people begged for help on a daily basis. Not only all the beds were occupied but also the corridors were filled with patients. KidsRights has financially supported the renovation of the hospital.
In addition to the hospital, the Angels of Light Program was established in January 2010. This is a day care programme where children from the emergency camps are fed, showered and provided with an education.
