Rainbow Homes
Street children in India
In India, millions of children live on the streets and have to fight for themselves when it comes to finding accommodation, food and safety. Without access to education and healthcare, these children are at great danger of becoming a victim of abuse, crime and prostitution. The girls, although smaller in number, are particularly at risk.
Shelter for street children in schools
KidsRights supports the Partnership Foundation in a sustainable solution; the Rainbow Homes. Schools have taken in hundreds of girls, both as pupils and as residents, whereas previously these girls lived on the streets. The investments needed to make a school a safe haven for street children are relatively modest – there is enough space for them to sleep and the kitchen facilities are already present to provide hot lunches to the regular pupils. This project has also helped to create friendships between children from different population groups and castes.
Rainbow Homes in Delhi
The first Rainbow Home was established in Calcutta in a private school. Following the success of the project in Calcutta, the Partnership Foundation also set up two Rainbow Homes in Delhi. The school buildings were renovated with the support of KidsRights and Wilde Ganzen. In Rainbow Home Kilkari and Rainbow Home Kushi, in Delhi, the children receive food, shelter, education, medical care and attention. The children remain in contact with their families as much as possible. And where possible, the girls visit their families during the holidays.
KidsRights has supported the first Rainbow Home in Calcutta, the two Rainbow Homes in Delhi and the start of a new series of Rainbow Homes in the province of Hyderabad. Per Rainbow Home 100 to 150 girls can be accommodated.
