Amkhitha Tania Njwabule

"I want every child to feel empowered, to care for our planet, and to know their voice can create real change in their community."

Amkhitha Njwabule (14), from South Africa, grew up in a marginalized township in Cape Town, where poverty, limited opportunities and environmental challenges affect many young people. Seeing how inequality can shape children’s wellbeing, education and sense of belonging inspired her to create safer, more supportive spaces where children can learn and grow.

In 2022, Amkhitha founded Junior Leadership Projects, taking children into conservation spaces while teaching them about nature, leadership and teamwork. She also leads interactive workshops on climate change, biodiversity, sustainable living and food security, helping children understand how they can care for their communities and environment.

Amkhitha has mentored more than 10,500 children from 23 primary schools, giving them opportunities to build confidence, learn new skills and understand their rights. With support from Beyond Expectation Environmental Project, she continues to combine environmental education with youth leadership, creating spaces where children can discover their potential and take action in their communities.
