Marium Zahra

Nominee in the Spotlight

We can change the world every day through telling their stories, contributing to our communities, and having hope.

Marium Zahra

Marium Zahra (17), immigrated to the United States from Pakistan as a young child. Her own experiences with discrimination and the challenges faced by her family because of their immigration status made her deeply aware of the struggles of marginalised communities.

She has served as a lawyer for teenagers involved in juvenile detention proceedings, representing them in teen court and helping make sure their voices are heard. In one case, she highlighted profiling and discrimination and helped her client receive a lesser charge.

Marium also uses journalism to speak up for young people. She has published work with NPR, The Nation, Teen Vogue, The Environmental Magazine and other publications, covering issues such as school policing, censorship in schools, environmental fears and youth participation in politics. Her writing reaches wide audiences through these national publications.

Alongside her journalism and legal advocacy, Marium has taken part in youth activism and social justice workshops. Supported by her parents and teachers, she continues to use her voice to challenge discrimination and make space for young people in decisions that affect them.
