Children of Africa can help build a better world

Marie Aimee Ingabire (15), is from Rwanda. Marie Aimee lives in Muyumbu Sector, Rwamagana District, Rwanda — an area with improving infrastructure but ongoing struggles with malnutrition, limited early education, and poverty-driven school dropout. She is nominated alongside fellow changemakers Yabess Kevin Uwase, Yannick Shema Sangwa, Hubert Shema Sangwa, and Kevin Umutambyi.

Every Saturday, these children gather at the home of Mama Charlotte, Managing Director of the Great Lakes Opportunities and Peace Initiative Africa (GLOPIA), for the Shooting Stars Club. There, they learn about environmental leadership and climate action, build kitchen and community gardens to improve food security, and help each other with homework — since many of their parents are farmers with little formal education.

The children also build “peace bridges,” connecting with children in other African Great Lakes countries to show that even young people can contribute to peacebuilding. They take part in Rwanda’s Umuganda community clean-up program, helping keep the country one of the cleanest in Africa.

Everything they learn at the club, Marie Aimee and her friends bring home — sharing it with family and friends, spreading better nutrition, stronger school performance, and a spirit of peace throughout their community.
