Growing up as a child of a parent with disability, Akum came across numerous girls with disabilities and children born to parents with disabilities who have been abused in one way or the other, yet have no courage to speak out. Thus she decided to be the voice of the voiceless and fight for the rights of such vulnerable girls to ensure that their voices are heard. She started working as an advocate for adolescent girls at the Lilian Dibo Foundation.
