The internal political conflicts in Burundi have forced her family to leave Burundi and to find refuge in the Democratic Republic of Congo.  War Child Holland organized recreational activities for the refugee children in Lusenda Camp and Deborah joined these activities, especially within the traditional dance group in the camp. This has been her passion up to today. Presently, Deborah actively assists in War Child Holland’s recreational activities on behalf of other refugees’ children. She is also an actress and teaches other children in participatory theater plays used to sensitize people. She teaches children to convey the message of protection through dance and traditional educational songs, where they invite community leaders, decision-makers and other key people to listen to their message of claiming their rights.
