Santiago’s mother is a gypsy woman who belongs to the gitanos rom of Colombia. Their social and economic status is low. This social injustice of Colombia led Santiago to become a leader in the underprivileged communities of the city. Santiago is interested in the field of children’s rights because the country is currently living a peace process, which requires the transformation of the cultural practices. When he was 10 years old, he started to attend workshops and reading clubs in the public libraries in the city. The gypsy tradition made him believe in the idea of working with communities in conditions of displacement, racial discrimination and poverty. Therefore, together with his friend he founded Viajeros entre Letras, which consists of a social project that promotes reading in underprivileged communities. Santiago and his mother are currently founding a library for the community of Caimalito in Pereira.
