Her achievements include founding children’s rights clubs in three public schools and establishing five children’s rights assemblies in informal settlements across Kisumu and Vihiga. She created a community library in Manyatta Slums that doubles as a safe space for children and successfully advocated for improved healthcare access in Vihiga County. Lisa has also campaigned during the Gen Z protests in Kenya and promoted children’s cybersecurity awareness. With an impact reaching over 100,000 people online and thousands more offline, Lisa is a powerful young voice advancing education, healthcare, and protection for children.

Lisa Gem, a 12-year-old from Kenya, is already recognized as a national leader in children’s rights. She was named the 2022 Upcoming Human Rights Defender of the Year, won the 2024 Sigand Nyinam Award, and was listed among the 60 Most Influential Women in Kenya since Independence by the Nation Newspapers. Inspired by classmates’ stories of abuse, she became determined to ensure children’s voices are heard. Lisa is a founding member of the Kondele Social Justice Center, where she organizes activities in solidarity with human rights defenders and her community. She has also received strong support from her parents and national organizations like Defenders Coalition and Amref, which have amplified her advocacy.
