“When children learn to understand their emotions, they can care for others and build safer, more respectful, and happier spaces for everyone.”

Gutierrez Rengifo Lenay (13), Gian Luigi Fino Navas (14), Keyner Leonardo Pinzon Rodriguez (16), Alejandra Moreno Puentes (14), are a group of students from Colombia. At Colegio La Giralda, a public school in Bogotá, five students turned their own struggles into a mission for others. Having faced conflicts with classmates, difficulty managing emotions, and tough family situations themselves, these students realized their experiences could become tools to help their peers instead of just personal burdens.

They created school mediation spaces where they step in during peer conflicts, guiding classmates toward dialogue instead of fighting. They designed their own activity, “The Tree of Frustration,” to help other children recognize and express their emotions. They offer peer-to-peer support, listening to students going through tough times, and lead sessions teaching emotional skills to both students and families. While the school’s counselling team offers guidance, it’s the students themselves who propose and lead every action.

The impact goes beyond their own classroom: these five have become genuine agents of change within their school and beyond, promoting every child’s right to grow up in a safe, respectful, and emotionally supported environment. By leading rather than just receiving support, they’re proving that children don’t just deserve protection, they can actively provide it too.
