Crisis is an opportunity to turn our adversity into success

Treasure Joe King

Treasure Joe King (17), grew up in a conflict-affected community in northern Nigeria, where school closures, displacement, and a shortage of qualified teachers made education a constant struggle. Relying on shared phones, radio lessons, and peer support just to keep learning, Treasure watched friends—especially girls—drop out due to safety concerns, early marriage, or lack of digital access. That experience sparked a mission to change things.

Treasure established peer learning hubs, creating safe spaces where children could gather and access lessons using shared devices and offline digital content. Treasure also trained peers, particularly girls and out-of-school children, in basic digital literacy—teaching them how to use educational apps, access online lessons, and stay safe online. Beyond that, Treasure led awareness campaigns at community meetings and youth forums, helping parents and local leaders understand why continuous learning matters, even during crises, and curated offline learning materials like videos and PDFs for children with little or no internet access.

With support from parents, teachers, and community leaders, Treasure’s grassroots efforts grew steadily—starting with a small peer group and expanding as more families saw the value of accessible, community-driven education..
