Advocate for other oppressed people before you die

Ewora Daniel

Ewora Daniel (17), is from Uganda. Growing up in remote rural villages in northern Uganda, surrounded by swampy wetlands, Ewora saw firsthand how the seasons could steal a child’s education. During the rainy months, rising water levels cut off school routes and pushed parents to send over 1,000 children into the swamps to dig and grow rice just to afford school fees.

Ewora decided to fight back. He advocated for the rights of these 1,000 children, calling on parents to stop the practice, since it broke environmental laws and put children in harm’s way. He created a five-person monitoring team to track ongoing child labor in Kwania District, and pushed for accountability, even calling for parents’ arrest when the practice continued.

The impact has been huge: 70% of children under 18 in the region stopped digging in the swamps, local government intervened, and swamp digging dropped by 60%, protecting the environment. Over 500 children’s health improved as a result. Ewora’s advocacy became a major topic of local discussion, reaching over 2 million people on social media, and proving that one determined teenager can help change both a community’s laws and its future.
