Maria Akter Baby

Maria Akter Baby (17), is from Bangladesh. In Bangladesh, where child marriage, labor, and abuse often steal childhoods away, Maria has become a fierce advocate for marginalized children — especially girls and children with special needs.
In just the past year, Maria rescued 46 children from hazardous child labor and made sure each one was enrolled in school, breaking the cycle of exploitation through education. She also prevented 29 child marriages, giving those girls a different path forward.
As President of the Shurjodoy Shishu Forum, Maria mentors over 1,200 active members who carry her mission into their own neighborhoods. Through courtyard meetings and school workshops, she has directly engaged over 5,000 community members, going door-to-door to shift social norms around child protection.
Through World Vision Bangladesh’s three-stage journey of Protection, Leadership, and Advocacy, Maria has moved from simple advocacy to real, life-changing action — proving that one determined young activist can rescue an entire community’s children from harm.
