John Dave D. Dataro

We must act for, with, and by the children because they are experts of their lives!

John Dave D. Dataro (17), from Philippines has faced gender discrimination, bullying and opposition when he stood up for children’s participation.

He founded Building Aspirations Through Advocacy (BATA), a series of school-wide programs that raise awareness about children’s rights. Dave also brings young people’s voices into policy and decision-making. He contributed to child protection and anti-bullying policies, proposed recommendations to regional councils and advised on child protection standards for local governments.

His impact reaches far beyond his school. Through campaign videos, online consultations and orientations, Dave has engaged classmates, youth groups and organisations in children’s rights activities. As a facilitator at national and regional children’s conferences, he has created space for hundreds of young people to share their concerns and ideas.

Dave keeps showing what young people can do when their voices have a place at the table.
